Sparkling shoes: Six of the best shoe inspirations for 2018

There’s a regal mood about the new pointy mules and heels. There hasn’t been footwear this fancy since France’s Ancien Regime, when artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s girl in The Swing sent her satin slipper flying through the air. Think lavish embellishments and gem-bright colors. These are for feet that want to be noticed — a bejeweled brilliance and clickety-clack on parquet floors will announce their arrival.

Alexander McQueen's scarlet tweed slipper

Fans of flats who want painless daytime glamour will lust after the Alexander McQueen scarlet tweed slipper. Crystal White Pearls and Crystal Creamrose Light Pearls embroidered on the toe, plus an Emerald crystal framed by a gold-plated Single Stone Setting, make a light-filled contrast to the textured fabric.

Giannico Daphne's sapphire satin mules

For down-to-earth evening opulence, Giannico Daphne’s sapphire satin mules will dress up anything from silk pajamas or a satin tux to a show-stopping ball-gown. Make sure a glittering crust of Swarovski crystals peeks out from under the hem. Here, blazing from the toe, Light Siam and Scarlet crystals have been set into rhodium-plated settings. In short: low-heeled but high profile.

The hottest heel right now is the kitten. Cute and easy-to-wear, this is a welcome comeback. Prada and Erdem’s sling-backs draw the classic kitten line. For Spring/Summer 2018 ready-to-wear, Prada adds a contemporary, punky edge with shiny studs and Cabochons in Light Chrome.

Meanwhile, Erdem celebrates the traditional, adorning its ruby-red shoes with an elegant floral spray created using Cabochon White Pearls in gold-plated Single Stone Settings and Crystal Creamrose Round Pearls.

As an eye-catching alternative, Marni’s Spring/Summer 2018 ready-to-wear collection presents an ultra-modern take on the kitten heel. This crimson pump exaggerates the line to produce an effect that is somewhere between Rococo curlicue and aerodynamic futurism. Feathers and a multi-faceted Chessboard Circle Flat Back in Aquamarine punctuate this statement shoe with ravishing style.

Speaking of statement shoes, they don’t come much bolder than Mulberry’s Smock Pump in emerald-green lamb nappa leather: it is furnished with a fluted ball-heel that we are more used to seeing on the foot of a fine antique. Scattered over the softest leather are Swarovski Fancy Stones in colors including Crystal and SiamSilver-plated Single Stone Settings enhance the gem-like, fine jewelry effect.
