Swarovski has been adding glamour to the famous catwalk extravaganza since 2002 by exclusively providing the opulent crystals that embellish the looks, jewelry, accessories, and footwear worn at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, as well as the brand’s in-store lingerie ranges. It’s a textbook example of a creative collaboration with exceptional results.
This year, for the first time, the Victoria’s Secret Angels graced Shanghai with their presence. The show was staged on Monday, November 20, marking the 15-year “crystal anniversary” of the enduring relationship between Swarovski and the legendary lingerie brand in memorable style.
In celebration, over a million crystals were lavished on 22 looks: “It’s all about sparkle, shine and fantasy, and that is what Swarovski brings to the show,” said Monica Mitro, Victoria’s Secret EVP of Brand Communications and Events. “Especially this year’s Swarovski Look: it’s a completely over-the-top wing, and Elsa Hosk brings it to life.”
Themed sections included Punk Angel, Porcelain Angel, A Winter’s Tale, Millennial Nation, Goddesses, and Nomadic Adventure—the latter featuring the celebrated Swarovski Look. Show-opener Punk Angel set the pace with an exciting collaboration with Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing entitled Victoria’s Secret x Balmain. The first Angel on the runway was Candice Swanepoel in plaid fishnet teamed with red and black-feathered wings. Following her were Josephine Skriver, Martha Hunt, Jasmine Tookes and Stella Maxwell in crystal-studded leather and denim, plus gleaming metallic flourishes. A highlight was Elsa Hosk in a fishnet shrug and denim vest hand-embroidered with a sensational spiky crystal crust.
In the Porcelain Angel section, Bella Hadid showcased the delicate blue-and-white aesthetic of ancient Ming vases with hand-painted leather gloves. Kelly Gale made a radiant impression in a silk chiffon negligee and feather wings sparkling with crystals from Swarovski. Swarovski Brand Ambassador Karlie Kloss walked in A Winter’s Tale wearing a silk, metallic-frosted peignoir with golden feather wings blooming ice-blue flowers.
The athleisure global trend was exemplified by new face Xin Xie in a PINK-logoed Strappy Ruffle Plunge Triangle Top and Logo Boyshort Cropped Mesh Jersey. Bella Hadid made a second appearance in the Goddesses section in a breathtaking blue silk gown with gold-colored embroidery and a brass crown. Lais Ribeiro modeled the two-million-dollar Fantasy Bra handset with diamonds, yellow sapphires and blue topaz in 18k gold.
As a finale, Nomadic Adventure erupted onstage in a carnival of beaded color and high-octane dazzle, starring Adriana Lima, Taylor Hill, plus Alessandra Ambrosio in kaleidoscopically bright feathers.
Elsa Hosk had the honor of wearing this year’s Swarovski Look: the spectacular creation was custom-made by Paris-based couturier Serkan Cura, adorned with a rainbow of 275,000 crystals and 200 yards (183m) of woven ribbon. It was finished off with a crystallized wing harness and hand-beaded jewelry. Over 29 crystal effects and colors were used in the Swarovski Look—more than any previous year.
Effects included the new Citrine Shimmer, Hyacinth Shimmer, and Light Siam Shimmer; Crystal Aurora Borealis, Crystal Iridescent Green, Crystal Luminous Green, Crystal Metallic Sunshine, Crystal Paradise Sunshine and Crystal Volcano. Among the colors were Chrysolite Opal, Citrine, Dark Moss Green, Emerald, Fire Opal, Fuchsia, Hyacinth, Indian Siam, Jet, Jonquil, Light Colorado Topaz, Light Siam, Light Topaz, Red Magma, Sunflower, Tangerine, Topaz, and Yellow Opal.
