Thonet in a crystal dress

Worldwide, Thonet is considered as pioneer in the furniture design. The slogan "THE BOYS – TAILORED FOR THE CATWALK" symbolizes the cooperation between the traditional brands Swarovski and Thonet.

In a first step,  research was conducted in order to find out how a classical piece of furniture may look  in a Swarovski crystal dress. Four chairs, namely, "The Prince", "Danubia", "Edgy" and "Spike" are the sparkling results of that research.

Swarovski and Thonet have chosen two out of these four designs for selling: "The Prince" and "Danubia". Both crystal art designs are based on the design of number 14, one of the classics of Thonet’s furniture designs.

That archetypally design number 14, known as coffee shop chair or the bistro chair, was developed by the brothers Thonet in 1859 and is still produced today. The  model is viewed as one of the most popular chair designs and is still regarded as top-selling article within seating furniture.

Chair design number 14 used an innovative new process that allowed it to be disassembled for mass production and shipped around the world in a compact package. The design won a gold medal for Thonet at the 1867 World's Fair in Paris. Its simple design and affordable price fueled Thonet’s growth into an international company. About the chair, Le Corbusier said "Never was a better and more elegant design and a more precisely crafted and practical item created."

This is the chair chosen as the basis for Thonet's chairs for Swarovski’s "The Prince" and "Danubia". The form and function of number 14 remain, but the chairs have been transformed into crystal art by thousands of sparkling crystals, turning a small functioning chair into art that dazzles as a tribute to the collaboration of Thonet and Swarovski.
