Fredrikson Stallard

Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard categorize the work of their studio, Fredrikson Stallard, as “fairy tales for grownups”. For them, design is about starting a conversation between their work and the observer. Usefulness is not key to their motivation. The word they use to further define their philosophy is “entopic” as originally attributed to the Greek architect, Constantinos Doxiadis, to describe his vision for the post-war reconstruction of Greece. In the words of Doxiadis, “entopia is a real place, which satisfies the dreamer and is acceptable to the scientist, a place where the projections of the artist and the builder merge”. Fredrikson and Stallard say: “If you want something useful you can go to IKEA. How you connect with an object is more important to us. In today´s disposable culture that relationship is increasingly lost, we are keen to enable a story with objects”.
